Urge American Gastropub
When a chance to open another restaurant some 50 feet from The Barrel Room came up, 3LB decided that they needed a concept as different as possible. With the growing craft beer scene in San Diego, it seemed obvious that burgers and beer would be pretty different from a bistro and wine bar. San Diego had 34 breweries at the time that Urge opened, one of the highest totals in the country and people were starting to talk about a bubble. There’s 117 as of 11-1-15. Guess we haven’t hit a bubble yet…
Urge opened in July 2010. We decided to put up 51 taps and offer 150 beers by the bottle. The focus of TBR was to dress down wine while the focus for Urge would be to dress up beer. The focus was on fresh, local and organic food as much as possible. We wanted to use the best ingredients we could to make our food. We’ve had to expand the original Urge twice to accommodate our guests. I guess we did something right.
